న జాతిః న కులం తాత , న స్వాధ్యాయః శ్రుతం న చ ,
కారణాని ద్విజత్వస్య , వృత్త మేవాస్య కారణమ్. మహాభారతము, శాంతి పర్వము
వత్సా ! బ్రాహ్మణత్వమునకు కారణము జాతి కాదు, కులమూ కాదు, వేదాధ్యయనమున్నూ కాదు, పాండిత్య మంతకంటెనూ కాదు; ప్రవర్తన మొక్కటియే దానికి కారణము.
మంచి ప్రవర్తన కలిగియుండటమే కాని మిగిలిన ఏదిన్నీ బ్రాహ్మణత్వానికి కారణాలు కావని మహాభారతంలో చాలా విష్పష్టంగా చెప్పబడింది .
